Sandilands Rehabilitation centre

The Psychiatric hospital is a 352 bed facility inclusive of the Substance Abuse Units, with a total of nine (9) psychiatric wards as follows:

  • Two acute wards: Eloise Penn and Podlewski Wards
  • Two medium stay wards: Kliene and Kelly Wards, housing male and female patients respectively
  • Two long stay wards: Female and Male Wards
  • An Adolescent Unit (male and female dorm). This unit accommodates both male and female patients with psychiatric problems referred from the courts and other referral Agencies.
  • Robert Smith Ward for mentally and physically challenged / disadvantaged children established in 1988.
  • A Maximum Security unit that accommodates patients primarily remanded by the courts.
Alcohol Unit

The three Substance Abuse Units provide 53 inpatient beds. These units include:

  • The Alcoholic Unit which was built in 1964 as a result of the need to provide rehabilitative care for individuals with alcoholic addiction.
  • The Lignum Vitae co-ed Unit was built in 1986 to deal with the rehabilitation of patients with illicit drug related mental health problems.
  • The Detoxification / Evaluation co-ed Unit was established in 1992 to serve as the unit for acute drug related admissions prior to the transfer of patients to either the Alcoholic or Lignum Vitae Unit.
Detox Unit

Community Counselling and Assessment Centre (CCAC) provides out-patient, walk-in, mental health and substance abuse treatment services Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. except on public holidays.

In addition to assessment and out-patient treatment, the CCAC also provides follow-up care services for substance abuse patients.
