Geriatric Unit

The Geriatric Hospital is a 128 bed facility that provides patients with complimentary ‘Hotel’ and ‘Hospital’ housing, medical and nursing care as well as some rehabilitative activities.

There are five (5) wards, which include:

  • Three (3) male wards: McLennen, Culmers and Pearce (caters to psycho-geriatric patients only)
  • Two (2) female wards: Thompson and Cruickshank

All wards remain fully occupied at all times and because the majority of patients are sick, aged and infirmed there are few discharges. The process of admission involves referrals from any member of society, various agencies and the Community Health Services / Public Health Department. All referrals are investigated by a Social Worker who refers the application to the Geriatric Admissions Committee for consideration. This committee meets monthly to consider applications and allocate beds as available.

The ‘Adopt a Grandparent Programme’ launched in 1999 is designed to foster community and special interest groups’ involvement in the holistic care of these patients.

A Gerontology clinic is held weekly at Anne’s Town Public Health Clinic for senior citizens.
